High Blood Pressure Awareness Month
High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
Some high blood pressure drugs can cause dry mouth or alter your sense of taste. Calcium channel blockers, in particular, can cause the gum tissue to swell and overgrow, resulting in chewing difficulties. If you do experience gum overgrowth, we will give you detailed oral hygiene instructions and may ask you to make more frequent dental visits for cleanings.

Osteoporosis And Dentistry
What could the connection be with these two? Medications that are commonly given to treat osteoporosis can cause problems with the jaw bones. It’s imperative that you tell us if you are taking or have ever taken any of these drugs (bisphosphonates) such as Fosamax, Boniva, Actonel, Reclast, etc. They can stay in your system for 10 years as they are absorbed into the bone. They are very helpful in the treatment of osteoporosis and there is no question that their benefits far outweigh their side effects. As your dental healthcare professionals, it is important that we know this information prior to doing any invasive procedure such as a tooth extraction. There can be complications to healing which we can go over if this pertains to you.
